Short history of color red

Did you know red is the third color, recognized in all studied languages, right after black and white, the basic representatives of darkness and light? When a certain language develops, it starts with a few major words, describing the basics and slowly expanding the vocabulary as it's needed to describe more and more complex issues.

Well, it looks red is at thevery top of the list of colors, needed to describe the world of every human being. We cordially invite you to join us at the exploration of the world, where this amazing color plays so important role. We intend to compile a stack of interesting articles about red color, its shades, uses, symbolism and other more or less important characteristics.

If you like what you see, don't be afraid to share it with your friends, relatives, neighbors and whoever might be interested in colors, especially in color red.

Did you know?

* Red hair occurs only at 1-2 % of world population, with highest frequency in Ireland (10 percent of population)

* Readheads carry melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), recessive gene, occuring in many mutations

* Studies proved people with red hair need more anaesthetic (up to 20 %) than non-redheads (MC1R influences endorphins)

* There are still many persisting superstitions about redheads: if your first caller in Great Britain has red hair, it supposedly brings you bad luck, in Polland, on the other hand, if you pass three redheads in a row, you'll win the lottery

* If we dig a bit deeper into the past, we can find even scariests myths about red-haired people: ancient Greeks believed they turn into vampires after death and Egyptins were so convinced about redheads having bad luck they tried to sacrifice them as soon as possible, to end their misfortune

When is a Redhead Day?

You heard it right. There is a special day just for people with red hair. Well , for everybody else too, if they have a friend or a sympathy with red hair (and who doesn't?).

A festival called Redhead Day started somehow incidentally. a painter named Bart Rouwenhorst, big fan of old masters Dante Gabriel Rossetti (18828-1882) and Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) wanted to pay an hommage to both of his idols, who portrayed several astonishing redheads in different situations. Rouwenhorst innitally wanted to make 15 new paintings of redheaded women and exhibit them, but his adveertisement get much more attention than he expected.

150 redheads volunteered and Rouwenhorst decided to choose 14 as innitially planned. The rest were photographed in a group session with a lottery deciding which one should be the fifteenth. This happened on September 24th 2005 and is officially the first Redhead Day. Next one was organized in a neighbourhood city Breda in 2007. From then on both genders of redheads are invited (if you are not a natural redhead, you can still visit a festival, but please wear as much redas you can).
